This school year, it is more important than ever for our third graders in Michigan schools to be proficient in reading because, “Incoming third graders this fall will be the first group whose spring test scores will be used to determine if they move on to fourth grade or not…” (Quote from MEA post – https://mea.org/reading-law-moves-toward-retention/).
Despite the passing of the “Read by Grade Three Law” in October of 2016, and the push to help our students become better readers, data shows that the proficiency rate has not increased, in fact it has decreased. See statewide results below for grade three.

As you can see, many of our third graders need serious help obtaining grade level reading skills. Here’s what I feel needs to happen:
•Teachers need support people (parents, tutors, classroom aids & volunteers and older students) to work with them.
•Support people need reading materials that reinforce what the students are learning in school.
•Support people need instruction in how to help the students with the materials.
•And most importantly of all, support needs to start in kindergarten.
